Many people in my congregation ask me, “do you think I will go to heaven when I die?” Although it would be interesting to text God for a list of those who may be on a heavenly approval list, should one exist, the Bible tells us, that no one but God knows who will be admitted.
Only God knows what is in a persons heart. Jesus tells us that “Only God knows our hearts, and only He knows whether a person has sincerely put his faith in Christ as his Lord and Savior.” (Matthew 7:1).
Additionally, Jesus has told us that “the gateway to life (heaven) is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” (Matthew 7:14)
Don’t Be Fooled
Going to church every week, tithing and confessing our sins to Jesus Christ, is not going to open the pearly gates to heaven for those foolish enough to think that their works, money and or a confessional prayer is going to secure their place in Heaven.
The Bible says that our good works are not enough to secure a persons place in heaven, saying that “we have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)
Nor, is ones faith that Christ died on the cross to become our ‘Lord and Savior’ enough to become one of the ‘few’ who enter heaven. “For the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.” (James 2:26)
The Answer Resides in You
Your own common sense should tell you that you cannot buy your way in to Heaven. Nor, confessing your sins and asking for forgiveness because you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross to wipe away your sins and therefore have faith that he will save you from going to Hell, make you a great candidate for God to invite you into his home.
The answer to, ‘will I go to Heaven’ when I die, resides in you. If you can in good conscious proclaim that you truly love God more than anything or anybody in this world, have truly and sincerely accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, put God first before yourself, anyone or anything, and that your main goal / mission in life is to serve God, you should have complete faith that God will reward you with eternal life in heaven. (Philippians 3:21-24)
What You Sow You Shall Reap
Be forewarned brothers and sisters, the Bible clearly tells us that “ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Galatians 6:7,8).
If you truly want to go to Heaven, you must sincerely be sorry for the sins you have committed, dedicate your life to serving God, and grow to love God beyond all human comprehension through prayer and reading his word, the Bible. It is easy to love God, however, many find it hard to set aside their own desires to make serving God the most important thing in their lives. Those who do, ‘Soweth to the spirit’ and “reap life everlasting’ in Heaven.
